The Google Linking Penalty Explained

Many webmasters are aware that Google has a special penalty if websites are building links too quickly or getting too many in-bound links in too short a time. This is often referred to as the 'linking penalty' and occurs because the Google algorithms think you are spamming the web to get in-bound links rather than growing them organically.
Actually the situation is a little more complicated than this and some careful SEO planning will mean that even if you build hundreds of links very quickly you will never encounter this penalty.
Personally I came across the penalty when I created a search tool that allowed people to place a ClickBank search tool on their websites. This had a link to the tool's home page embedded in the code. It took me a long time to get the tool's home page ranked but eventually it was and take-up took off. I had several hundred copies around the internet in only a few days and my page was ranking great... then it dropped off Google! I'd been penalized by big G for being successful!
This had dire consequences as I'd just come up with a killer new way of ranking my pages by building networks of sites. So I desperately started digging to find out what this penalty was all about and what was actually being penalized.
The first clue came from what the penalty itself is trying to do... It's an attempt by Google at preventing spammers from rapidly getting to the top of search pages by sending out link spam. The algorithm works based on the pages that the links point towards and on the link's anchor text.
As it turns out one of the most important factors here is the link anchor text. If you're getting lots of in-bound links with the same anchor text this really flags-up a potential penalty with Google. Spammers are lazy they use the same link text and the same destination page. So, if you only ever use one optimized link text for all your links and you build lots of in-bound links then you will get penalized. And this is what happened to me with my tool because everyone was copying the same base conde with the same link embedded in it. OK, there was nothing much I could do about that...
However, if you're building a big linking campaign there is something you can do. Vary your links. I know that this goes against SEO wisdom, where you're supposed to use your optimized keywords or keyphrase as your link text. But it's better to vary this rather than getting penalized by Google.
As a rule of thumb this is how you need to break down your links
60% main anchor text
20% variant of main anchor text
10% different anchor text
10% relevant but only related links (make sure each link is different)
5% completely different anchor text (including the dreaded 'click here').
Basically what you're trying to replicate are the kinds of links that normal humans would build for you. You will have variations in this... But there is an upside to this, however. You are now targeting not just your main keyword but you also have a spread of other related keywords which will mean that your main page is found for terms other than the ones you have optimized it for.
Basically you need to be clever about these links. Never, ever, make them all the same as this will raise a red flag in Google's algorithms. But if you build lots of links very quickly then you need to be clever about the link text you use. With the formula above you can help yourself to avoid link-building penalties.

What's Hot in ClickBank
With so much of my focus going on ClickBank and ClickBank associated pages over the past few (and the forthcoming months) I thought that I should add a weekly digest of What's Hot in ClickBank to you, my loyal readers. Each weekend I update the ClickBank feed for my Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace, which then drives the various Free ClickBank search and Ads Code systems I provide. I've also started to perform analyses of the current against the previous ClicBank datafeed releases. Each time ClickBank perform a new release they analyze their sales and other data for that time period and they re-evaluate product rankings on this basis. New products come in, old products fall out of the system and product rankings go up and go down. I will soon be making a full digest of these data available so you can check which products have moved, how the products you are promoting are doing, as well as keeping you informed of any product price changes...
What this isn't is a list of all the top products for the week. Indeed, the top products probably aren't the ones you should promote as there's a lot of competition out there. Rather, what I'm presenting is a digest of the 'hot' mid range products. The ones that are on the up. I also support these product statements with an analysis of what people are searching for on my system. And you have to remember that I annotate all he ClickBank products by hand so my Celtnet ClickBank Search System ClickBank search system is one of the most comprehensive out there, and certainly better that ClickBank's own serach system. It's also the same system that drives my Free ClickBank Search Code, allowing you to put comprehensive ClickBank searches on your site.
The ClickBank database driving this site was updated on Tuesday 08th April 2008 with the inclusion of 134 new products into the ClickBank system. These have been uploaded and annotated into the Celtnet ClickBank Marketplace and are now searchable. All the products have had their images updated and the products in ClckBank's 'top 30' in all categories have had their descriptions and sales text to make them easier for you to sell!
There fall-out from ClickBank's recent alteration to their ranking algorithm now seems over and product movement in the top 30 rankings seem to have stabilized. This time, as a result, there's much less churn in my Cletnet ClickBank Marketplace Digest.
Of the various searches performed on my site during the previous week, two really stand out. The first is for anything to do with 'weight loss' and the second for the terms 'forex trading' or clear debt so you can see that the economic downturn and the efect of Christmas bills are the two things foremost on people's mind. Interestingly, however, the products that are making most advances in terms of ClickBank rankings are all those to do with gardening (search for gardening greenhouse orchids. These seem to be the products to promote at the moment and if you can build a niche site around these terms then using these ad feeds for your site would be a real boon. Remember that it will soon be even easier for you to have these ads on your site as you can use an RSS feed along with your AdSense ads. I'll provide you with all the tools you need!

Getting more Revenue from Squidoo or Hubpage
Do you use Suidoo and/or Hubpages to promote your products and service, to perform affiliate marketing or as an additional source of income? If not, then why not?! They're excellent sources of additioal links and income for you. However, they can be a bit restrictive in what you can put up on them and how you can pull-in the money. But what if I could show you a simple method whereby you can squeeze more money from Squidoo lenses and Hubpages articles...
Both these systems allow you to add RSS feeds by just copying and pasting the RSS code into a spacial block or module. As it happens, as part of the Celtnet site's ClickBank Marketplace you can easliy create RSS feeds for any products in ClickBank you want. Just go to the Create ClickBank RSS Ads page type-in your ClickBank 'nickname' and select from the options which ads you need. You will get a single line of code back, which is your RSS feed with your ClickBank affiliate ID already embedded in there. Just copy this and type it into the Squidoo or Hubpage and let the system do the rest.
The Celtnet ClickBank system is human annotated to help you sell the products and the system is dynamic so that each time a page refreshes your visitors will see a new set of ads. The entire system is also updated weekly so that any ads you show will always be up to date in terms of ClickBank.
If you do this now then eBay will increase any commissions you earn by 5% during the month of April.

Links, Links, Links...
Yes, I know, we're back to the link building issues again. But links are important they're the life-blood of your on-line presence. This is why link-building simply has to be a standard part of your everyday startegy. You need to keep writing and submitting articles, you need to keep-up with your link-building and exchange efforts and you need to maintain those blog posts.
Whatever your web presence, as long as you have some kind of presence on the internet then you will need traffic to your site. The only way to get traffic to your site is to get more in-bound links. How you do this is up to you. But if you ignore getting links then you are simply allowing a good portion of what should be your internet-based income to be frittered away. Look at it this way, if you can gain a hundred new links from quality sites you could double your website's traffic... And writing articles is a great way of doing this. Each article allows you at least two back-links and you should have no problem creating 6 articles in a day. This means 12 articles per day and 100 back-links in less than two weeks!
Of course, all this is a lot of effort (which really does need to be done) but getting and maintaining links will eat into the time you have for adding content to your site. if you want to out-source this effort and can afford it then you could use the services of http://www.mysitesubmit.com (which have very reasonable plans and whom I can personally vouch for) to get immediate traffic to his site and to improve back-links. I used these guys when I was starting out as they're cheap but efficient. Now, though I would recommends AmazingBillboards 'Full Service Marketing' as the package of choice for any webmaster who needs lots of guaranteed traffic.
