Celtic Gods: The Alaunus God, Alaunus, Harmony

Alaunus
A Gaulish god, also known as Alannus and Alaunius, Alaunio: Harmony

This deity is known from several inscriptions found in Austria and France and he seems to be a local deity and may be a god of the 'lawgiver' type.

Synonyms: Alannus, Alaunius, Alaunio
Gaul: ?Harmony

A local deity from the areas of Mannheim and Salzburg in Austria. The Romans syncretized him with Apollo. As Alaunis he is known from Lurs in the Var regions of France. The same deity is also probably represented in a Greek inscription dedicated to Αλα[υ]νεινουι (Alauneinous) found at Nîmes in the Gard region of France, and he also probably corresponds to the deity Alaunio invoked at Notre-Dame-des-Anges, Alpes de Haute-Provence, France [CIL XII 1517].

His name bears the same Celtic alaw (harmony) first syllable as Alauna and they may well male and female forms of the same deity concept. Of course, an interpretation of the name may be 'he who brings harmony' and thus he may have been a 'protector of the tribe' or 'lawgiver' type of deity specific to the region of Austria where inscriptions dedicated to him were found.
