A Brythonic god known from an inscription at Blackmoorgate, Derbyshire where he is equated with Saturn and associated with Dis Pater, Hercules and Apollo. The liking of Arvalus with Saturn by Interpretatio Romana would indicate that Arvalus was a god of agriculture.
The possibility that Arvalus represents a god of agriculture is also indicated by the interpretation of this deity's name which can be derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic components *aro- (agriculture) and *-walo- (powerful) along with the Latinized masculine ending -us. Thus Arvalus is 'The Powerful Farmer'. As such he could be a forerunner of the god Amaethon.
