Celtic Gods: The Galuish Goddess, Bergusia (She who Brings Force [to bear])

Bergusia
A Gaulish Goddess: She who Brings Force [to bear]

Bergimus is a goddess known from the guild of metalworkers in Alesi, France. She is assumed to be a patroness of metalworkers, a function suggested by the possible interpretation of her name as 'She who Brings Force [to bear]', an echo of the matalworkers' hammers.

Gaul: She who Brings Force [to bear]

A Gaulish goddess, she is was worshipped at Alise-Sainte-Reine, Cíte d'Or, France. Though her name has previously been interpreted as meaning 'abundance' I propose that the goddess' name is derived from the proto-Celtic component *bero- (bring) and the Gaulish gussou (force) and her name can be interpreted as 'She Who Brings Force [to bear]'. A fitting epithet for a goddess of metal-workers, and a name that instantly brings to mind the strike of hammer on anvil.

Bergusia was the consort of Ucuetis and both may have been deities of crafts (the inscription naming both deities having been found in the guild-house of the metalworkers of Alesia). It is for this reason that she is believed to be a patroness of metal-workers, a very important role in Celtic society.
