Gaul: Strong Enclosure

Bolvinnus is a Gaulish god associated with the thermal springs of Bouhy (the Gallo-Roman village of Baugiacus), Niévre, France. He is equated with Mars and his invoked along with Dunatis.

Bolvinnus' name can be interpreted as being derived from the proto-Celtic components *balko- (strong) and *wi-na- (bend, enclosure). Thus the name could be interpreted as 'Strong Enclosure' or perhaps 'Powerful Defender'. Interestingly, this name corresponds to that of Dunatis (Protector of the Fort) and explains why the two deities are equated with one another and indicates that Bolvinnus was a protector god.
