Celeus
A Gaulish God: The Hidden One
Celeus is a Gaulish god known from a single fragmentary inscription found at Pourrières, France. Nothing is known about this deity save the name, which can be interpreted as 'The Hidden One' and may have been a god associated with the druidic order. |

Celeus is a god known form a fragmentary inscription found at Pourrières in the Var region of France. Due to the nature of the inscription the exact spelling of the name is uncertain and could as easily be Celineus as Celeus.
Despite the uncertainty in the exact form of this Theonym it seems to contain the proto-Celtic root *kel-o- which is the root from which the noun Celt is derived and means hidden or secret. If it is true that the druids thought of thsemselves as the Keltoi that is, the 'hidden people' then Celeus might have been a deity of the druidic order; though this is simply speculation.
