Cunomaglus
A Brythonic God: Great Hound Lord or Ensnaring Hound

Cunomaglus is Brythonic god known from a single inscription found at Nellteton, Wiltshire, Englsnd, where he is equated with Roman Apollo and depicted as a dog guarding the underworld in the local temple. He also sems to have a huter aspect to his cult (hence the linking to Apollo) and may also have been an oracular deity.

Cunomaglus is known from an inscription found at Nettleton, West Kington, Wiltshire that reads DEO APOLLINI CVNOMAGLO COROTICA IVTI [F] VSLM (To the god Apollo Cunomaglus, Corotica son of Iutus, willingly and deservedly fulfills his vow) where he is equated with Apollo.

It has been postulated that Cunomaglus means Great Hound Lord derived from cuno for dog. Though it's also possible that the magl component is derived from the verb maglu (to ensnare) which would make Cunomaglos 'the Ensnaring Hound'. Which may make some mythological sense given that the Hound God, Cunomaglos was represented as a dog guarding the underworld in the local temple sculpture of South Gloucestershire, a region that was an important centre for underworld cults during the later Iron Age. Thus Cunomaglus may represent a fragment of the underworld cults that survived into the Roman period.

His equation with the Roman Apollo may mean that Cunomaglus was a hunter deity. This would be compatible with his being an underworld deity and part of the 'Wild Hunt' (see Gwyn fab Nudd). It should also be noted that dogs have long held to have healing properties, associated with their saliva and this is yet another aspect of Apollo and possibly Cunomaglus.
