Celtic Gods: The Gaulish God, Donnotaurus (Brown/Dark Bull)

Donnotaurus
A Gaulish God, also known as Donnotavrus: Brown/Dark Bull

Donnotaurus (Donnotavrus) is a Gaulish god known from Roman records of Gaul, though the name of this deity does equate with that of the Irish god, Donn Tauros and probably is an animistic deity (a god of cattle).

Synonyms: Donnotavrus, Donn Tauros
Gaul: Brown/Dark Bull

Donnotaurus is a deity knwn by inference only. The name is known from Gaulish records and represents an amalgam of the Celtic donn (brown, dark) and the Latin taurus or Celtic *tavros- (bull). Though the original form may have been Donnotavros cognate with the Cymric tarw (bull).

The name seems to be the equivalent of the Donn Tauros of the Táin and may, in a similar way to beings like the Tarvostrigaranus or the Twrch Trwyth represent the survival of early animistic deities into later traditions.
