Synonyms: Lucoubus
Gaul: The Host

Lucubus is a deity known from a dedication found at Nïmes, France. This deity is also invoked as Lucoubus at Rabade in Spain where he is invoked as Lucoubus Aquienis. Though some have suggested that this deity is equivalent to the Gaulish deity Lugus the nature of Celtic pronunciation and consonantal preservation makes this highly unlikely. In the light of current evidence Lucubus has to be considered as a separate deity.

Etymologically Lucubus' name is derived from reconstructed proto-Celtic roots louko- (white) loukno- (light) luko- (bright); each homonyms for light thus the deity's name can be interpreted as 'Radiant'. Thus Lucubus and not Lugus is the radiant god. Interestingly as well neither Lucubus nor his Celtiberian counterpart Lucoubus are invoked as being assimilated with Roman Mercury. An observation that makes it even more unlikely that they are one and the same deity as Lugus.
