Marmogius is a deity known from north-western Gaul. Specifically, inscriptions dedicated to this deity have been discovered at Prewart in Austria (CIL III 5672) which reads: MARMOGIO SACR(um) M(arcus) V() RUTILIUS V(otum) S(olvit) L(ibens) M(erito) (Sacred to Marmogius Marcus V[..] Rutilius, willingly and deservedly [established this] in fulfillment of a vow), on a stone altar from Ptuj in Slovenia (CIL III 4014) which reads: MARMORIGO AUG(usto) SAC(rum) C(aius) MARIUS SERTONIUS EX IUSSU V(otum) S(olvit) (Sacred to the Great Marmorigus by the order of Claudius Marius Sertonius in fulfilment of a vow), and alsoFlavia Solva, (Leibnitz, Austria) where the following inscription was discovered (CIL III 5320): MARTIO LATOBIO MARMOGIO TOUTATI SINATI MOG[er]IO C[aius] VAL[erius] [v]ALERINVS EX VOTO (To Mars Latobius Marmogius, Sinatis, Toutatis and Mogetius. Caius Valerius Valerinus [offers this] in fulfilment of a vow). Though a number of deities are invoked in this inscirption, of interest here is the invocation of Marmogius as Mars Latobius Marmogius where Marmogius is used only as an epithet of Mars Latobius. Along with the other deities in the inscription Latobius is probably a deity of the 'Father of the Tribe' type. The name Marmogius is probably derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic elements *māro- (large) and possibly *med-o- (powerful). Thus Marmogius is 'The Large and Powerful'; a fitting epithet for a tribal leader deity.
The god Harmogius, may also represent the same god as Marmogius. He is known from inscriptions found at Perwarth in Austria (CIL III 5672), Scitarjevo in Hungary (where he is invoked as Harmogio [Au]g(usto) (CIL III 4014)) and also at Sackau in Austria (CIL III 5320) where he is invoked as Marit Harmogio and it is this inscriptio to Mars Harmogius that strongly suggests that Harmogius an Marmogius (who is also invoked at the same site are one and the same deity). A partial inscription found at Mains in Germany (CIL XIII 6738) and which reads deo Marti Arm and wich has been interpreted as an invocation of Mars Arm(ogius) may also represent a dedication to the same deity.
The god Maromogius is, undoubtedly identical to Marmogius and represents what is probably the more accurate Gaulish form of the deity's name. An inscription to Moromoguus (AE 1992 1367) is known from St Margathen, Austria. As Marinogius this deity is known from an inscription (AE 1987 852) found at Ptuj, Slovenia. A further inscription to Marti Ma[..]mogio Aug(usto) (The Great Mars Ma[...]mogio) has been discovered as Siska in Hungard. From the length of the gap two letters are missing and these could be ri or ro. Thus the dedication could be either to Marimogio or Maromogio. But the association with Roman Mars is interesting in light of the Leibnitz inscription given above and strongly suggests that Marmogius is a warrior/leader type of deity.
