Synonyms: Toutatis Medurinis
Gaul: The Essence of Drunkenness

Medurinis is a deity known from a single inscription found in Rome (Holder II, 528) where the name is used as an epithet for Toutatis. The name Medurinis is itself probably Gaulish in origin and formed from the reconstructed proto-Celtic lexical elements: *medwo- (drunk) and *rūnā- (secret) [the second element yields the Cymric word rhin (virtue, secret) which also has the sense 'nature'] thus the epithet has the sense: 'The Essence of Drunkenness'. This could indicate a divinatory function of the deity, but it may also relate to a function similar to that of the Irish Ogma as the provider of the mead for the sacral feast.
