Gaul: Goddess of the Way/Path

Sentona is a Celtic goddess known from only two inscriptions. The first of these was found in Labin, Croatia and the second in Fiume, the Veneto region of Italy (CIL III 03026). Originally this would have been in Cis-Alpine Gaul so that a dedication to a Celtic goddess in this region is not unexpected.

Apart from her name nothing is known of Setona's attributes. However, her name can be derived from the reconstructed proto-Celtic lexical element *sentu- (way) thus Sentona is the goddess of the way/path. Whether she represented the patronness of roads themselves or of those who travelled along them may never be known. As a goddess of roads she could also have had a function as a guide for the spirits of the departed to the next realm.
