Uxellinus is a Gaulish god known from a single inscription found at Tüffer, Slovenia [CIL II 5145] where he is invoked as IOM Uxellim[o] (Jupiter Optimus Maximus Uxellinus) and is therefore equated with the Roman god Jupiter by Interpretato Romana.
As no image of this god have survived and we have none of his attributes we can only gain an insite into this deity from his name. This can be interpreted on the basis of the reconstructed proto-Celtic lexicon as being formed from the elements *ow(x)selo- (high, elevated), the deicific particle -ī- and the Latinized masculine ending -us. This Uxellus' name can be interpreted either as 'The High God' or 'God of the High Place'. Uxellinus may also be related to the Gaulish deity Uxellus. Both interpretations for Uxellinus' name are compatible with his assimilaton into the cult of Jupiter who was both the highest god of the Roman pantheon and a deity of high places. Perhaps the dual interpretation of Uxellinus' name is intentional.
