Celtnet Information:

Your Source for Building a PC, Making a Website from Scratch and Generating an Income from it

Over the past eighteen months or so I have been building and designing my own website Nemeton and though its contents serve a very 'niche' market: those interested in the Celtic gods, Celtic literature and the food of the Celts the Romans and the Middle ages; it has allowed me to develop new technologies, and to find out how a number of things work. Though I do most of my own development on a Mac (being an Unix geek) I want to develop cross-platform web software so I've built my own PC from scratch.

In developing the website and expanding it (as well as purchasing machines and all the attendant software) I've incurred a fair amount of expenditure. In attempting to recoup this money I've run into many of the perils and pitfalls of trying to make money on the web. (Learn more here.)

What I'm trying to present here are some of the realities of putting up web pages, using the latest development technologies and trying to cover my costs (and make a little more) from web-based advertisements and affiliation.

The Overview:

What will appear on this site will be a step-by step guide covering everything you need to know about building your own pc as well as information about how you can use it to design and implement a website (or sites) using the latest web technologies: dhtml, xml and CSS. I will also consider things like weblogs (blogs) and news syndication via RSS as well as means of increasing traffic to your site. Tips and tricks will tell you how to add a favicon (favourites icon) to your website location field and how to add RSS feeds and home returns there.

Other tips will include adding dynamic html and JavaScript to your site as well as editorial tips on how to make your site more visually appealing and easier to read.

There will also be a 'how-to' on getting started with HTML, XHTML and how to use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to define and easily change the look and feel of your website (my site uses XHTML and CSS almost exclusively to do just about everything). Using CSS you only need to change a single file to affect the look and feel of your entire site rather than having to change each and every single HTML file.

I also introduce you to methods that you can use to generate income from your site and the web in general. Though these techniques are not 'get rich quick' schemes they are proven methods of generating 'trickle' income that will at least let your website pay for itself and may even make you a small additional income. Allied to this are techniques for improving your site's rankings on web search engines and for maximizing your traffic in general. After all, the more traffic you have to your website the more likely it is that someone will click on one of the adverts you're presenting to them.

What it's all about:

During the course of the past eighteen months I've had many things go right for me, but just as many things have gone wrong. I've spent hours designing ways of presenting information for the web and just as many hours looking for information on ways of performing tasks that I'd seen other websites do. I've found fragments of old code and updated them to current standards. Throughout all this time I've recorded the various things I've done and this website is a digest of all that information.

These include dealing with computer threats such as viruses, spyware and adware along with housekeeping items such as maintaining your windows registry. In each case I try to be as fair and as authoritative as possible. If there is a valid and effective free alternative I will try to point this out. In terms of any systems or software mentioned, I either use them myself or will have had at least some experience with them; whether that be through my own machines and website or via my regular work.

Hopefully I'll present what I've found in an useful and entertaining way. After all it is one of the tenets of the internet that information should be shared and made available.
