Creating a Minisite

On the internet, the much-vaunted adage 'Content is King' remains as much of a truism today as it ever did. The major content indexers and their web spiders simply love sites full of keyword-rich text that's also replete with content and reads well in English.

If this is the case how, then, can you even begin to quickly start getting people to visit your website and hopefully to click on your ad campaigns and to buy from your affiliate partners? The answer to this is a 'micro site' (also known as a mini-site or minisite). A what? I hear you asking yourselves. Well, read on to find out.

The Code:

You can grab the templates and all the code for creating your own adsense-focused minisite or microsite based on mine here. Though this code is focused on driving users to the site based on the content you can modify any way you wish.
The form-mail automated emailer script used by the website is also available here
All this code is free, please download and use to create your own sites.

Micro-sites and Mini-sites:

A microsite is in effect a mini website that has its own branding and content and is entirely self contained. Usually it will consist of a maximum of ten pages and will include a site map, a feedback or e-mail page a links page and quite possibly an RSS feed that maintains fresh content to a site.

For example here's a microsite I have dedicated to weight loss with Hoodia gardonii. Believe it or not, it took me fifteen hours' work to create this site, including all the images, the content and the web code (even the e-mail page). As you can see it's very highly focussed on a single item and set of key-words but has real content. Whatever else you may be doing with your microsite your content still has to be good.

The key here is to pick your keywords and then to use them everywhere you can. Include them in your text and in your images and links. Re-iterate them in navigation links as well. That way your text will read well but the indexing spider will see them and consider them valid. You don't want your page down-ranked because the spider thinks you're cheating.

Other elements of the site design are important. The sitemap is critical as it provides internal links to all your pages and aids your visitors in navigating your site. After all, they may jump into any of your pages. Remember, all the content needs to be relevant and useful.

Make your site look professional (a good graphic is important as is the overall layout). Also your ads should blend-in with the site and they should not be threatening.

Duplicating the Model

Once you've created one adsense site (if you're using the right code tools that is) it's then very easy to create another one. Here's a second microsite of mine, this time focussing on prostate cancer. This is intended as a member of a large number of connected microsites focussed on different cancers. Note how the layout is the same as before, but it looks completely different (a question of simply changing 12 elements in my CSS file). This time, it only took me ten hours (including research) to put this microsite up. I estimate that the next microsite will be done in hours (a single evening's work). This site also includes an RSS feed which means fresh content every day; something that will keep people coming back for more.

Slapping-up a microsite is simply a matter of creating a CSS file that defines the way your site looks and of making template pages that allow you to add content, banners and images. To get you started I've put all the necessary templates and instructions on how to create your microsite on my FTP server. Simply open, change and deploy. Even the code for getting web feedback is there. Enjoy...

Getting the Code:

You can grab the templates and all the code here. The form-mail automated emailer script is also available here

Putting it all together:

Again, the FTP link to grab the templates and everything else is here: here

Grab and unzip the code then simply follow the instructions in the README documents provided to use these templates for your own microsite. All I ask is that if you use this you either preserve the link to my site on the template footers or, if you don't like that in your footer include a link to this page somewhere else on your site. Play nice and I will continue developing and making available software like this (remember that other people out there are charging $30 and more for these kinds of templates).

The code for the site has also been put up on this page so that you can see what it should look like.

Full details on how to deploy the form-mail.pl can be found on this form-mail detail page.
