Welcome to the new home of the Celtnet Mobiles information site. This page is the third in a series of three articles that take you through the process of dismantling your Sharp GX-20 mobile/cellular phone.

Sharp GX-20 Disassembly: Part 3

Introduction

In the second part of this series you learnt about how to disassemble the battery compartment of the Sharp GX-20. This article completes the process by showing you how to disassemble the screen assembly. Once this is done you will have all the components removed and isolated.

The Screen Assembly

Opening the Screen Assembly

The first step here is to open the screen assembly. Use your plastic tool or any straight plastic edge to carefully open the case. Make sure you go around every edge. Once this is done the two halves of the phone will simply come apart. It should be no problem for you to lift the outer side of the case from the shell.

Flip the Battery Motherboard Over

Carefully take hold of the motherboard component for the SIM card/battery and flip it over so that it rests on top of the display board.

As you can see, with the ruber plugs removed the two screws holding the top part of the battery housing bay are now revealed. Simply unscrew and remove these.

Sharp GX-20 Keypad remover

It's now time to remove the keypad. First remove the grey plastic restrainer at the back of the phone. This simply and readily lifts out. Now you can remove the keypad itself.

Sharp GX-20 Removal of Electronics

Now its time to remove the main electronic components. The screen assembly and the power/sim card assembly are joined together by ribbon cabbles. Be careful not to damage these. I've found that the easiest way of doing this is to gently hold the base of the secren assembly and of lift it up. Once it's free of the case wiggle the assembly so that the ribbon cables pop out of the hinge housing. Once the ribbon cables are free fold the screen assembly on top of the power/SIM card and lift both components out together before setting them safely aside.

Sharp GX-20 Screen Cover

Now it's time to remove the microphone. This is housed at the base of the keyboard housing. Be careful when removig this as the two tiny coiled contacts are very fragile. Otherwise it's very easy to remove with a pair of tweezers.

Now it's time to handle the hinges between the two sections of the phone. The mian hinges are clutches housed in the join between the two halves of the phone. Use a flat-head screwdriver to ease the clutch hinge from its housing then use your tweezers to gently ease it away.

Removing hinge pading

Within the hinge well you will see two small pieces of padding. Whilst not essential it is a good idea to remove and keep these as they aid to protect the motherboard ribbon cables from the effects of chafing.

Removing the dimagnetic damper

Next you will need to remove the diamagnetic damper which is situated near the main speaker. This is just a rectangle of metal that just lifts away very easily.

Removing the Main Speaker

Now you can remove the main speaker. This is stuck to he padding surrounding it so it may be a little difficult to get loose. Be paitient so you don't damage the padding too much. Once the speaker is loose and stored safely remove the padding itself and store that too. If you get the point of your tweezers beneath the padding it will come away cleanly.

Removing the Micro Motor

Using your tweezers again carefully peel-off the screen protector strip. This is adheseive, be careful to protect the adhesive so you can easily stick to your new case. This also has copper strips embededd in it for electromagnetic damping and you need these for your new case.

Removing the Protective Pads

There are a few protective pads within the case that you need to remove. These aid to hold the printed circuit boards firmly in place.

Removing the Aerial

There are only a few more jobs to do. The first is to remove the spring clip housing for the volume buttons. Be gentle with this, as if you bend it re-assembly will be much more difficult.

Removing the Infra Red Cover

The final thing to do is to remove the infra red housing cover. Just gently bend back the two spring clips on the side of the black housing and it will come away easily.

You have now fully disassembled your Sharp GX-20 mobile phone and you have a big pile of components. To re-assemble you phone in its new housing simply reverse the entire process that you've just gone through in this disassembly.
